The second best time is now.” - Chinese Proverb

Beautification Project - Phase 1

Update…

While we have made significant progress in restoring damaged sections of our 1955 entrance walls along Northwest Highway there is still much work to be done including repairing sections between Rolling Rock and Hackney. The walls at Rolling Rock have suffered from bad repairs in the past and there sections that will need to be completely rebuilt which means we will need more brick than previously planned for. The new brick will be fired in Nebraska in August and work will resume when the new brick arrives.

Brick Wall Restoration

Highland Meadows Neighborhood Association is leading an effort to restore the 1950’s era brick entrance walls along Northwest Highway between Capri and Hackney. These basket weave brick walls were built over 65 years ago and mark the entrances to our neighborhood from Northwest Highway. Over the years the brick has crumbled and these decorative walls have been allowed to fall into disrepair.

Restoration of these walls includes resourcing bricks that match the color and size of the original “Palmer” bricks. We are using “antique rose” colored mortar to match the original mortar that was used when they were built. The foundation is being repaired where it is needed and older poorly executed repair attempts are being corrected. Finally, new capstones will be added to the brick pillars.

We believe that these “breeze brick” walls can once again be an elegant element that welcomes homeowners and guests, and one that reflects our mid-century heritage as a neighborhood.

Beautification Project - Additional Landscaping - Phase 2

This restoration project will also include additional landscaping that will provide year round color, texture and a natural sound buffer from Northwest Highway. A new landscape care program will assure that these areas remain healthy, beautiful and clean.

The updated landscape plan will incorporate a wide variety of Native Texas plants that are drought tolerant, provide a sound barrier and natural habitat, preserves the 1955 planners vision, supports historic preservation and bio-diversity, assures historic continuity, reduces the heat island effect, encourages pollinators, and adds value to our entire neighborhood.

Beautification

Highland Meadows is a neighborhood that is blessed with beautiful mature trees. For several years, we have had an ongoing program of planting and maintaining native species trees throughout our neighborhood. In 2012 we began partnering with Texas Trees Foundation to determine the best locations for planting more trees. In partnership with the Foundation, and with donations from our neighborhood businesses and residents, we planted 40 native species trees along the marginal divider on Northwest Highway between Capri and Grenadier.

This colonnade of trees not only cleans the air we breathe but also creates a sound barrier from Northwest Highway, making our neighborhood streets more peaceful.
